The other day I read an news bit in the CNN IBN website which basically said that a huge group of NRI organisations ( 25 to be exact) have sent a letter to US Secretary of State asking not to issue a US visa to Mr.Narendra Modi.I have some serious doubts in this whole issue.Let me put them down in order:
1] I find this request by the NRI organisations to be particularly disturbing. For the record, Mr.Narendra Modi is the chief minister of Gujarat. It is the tenth biggest in terms of population and seventh biggest in terms of area. Those statistics tell me it is a pretty big state and most likely an important one too in all regards. The way it looks , the people of the state have voluntarily chosen Mr.Modi to be their representative not once but twice. So that makes him a representative of people of India and to ask the government of another country to judge his moral sensibilities sounds like a big insult to the intellect of the people of Gujarat in particular and the country in general.
2]NRI`s are people who have basically migrated to others countries and have chosen to to live there at least for some period of time.My understanding is that for the period they are outside India, they don’t make any productive contributions to their homeland.(Please let me know if I am wrong on this one, I would really like to know). So when there are no contributions to the development of the country from them, why do they try and meddle with its affairs that too in a foreign land, causing embarrassment to Indian government.(Didn’t any of the leaders of the these organisations read what Vito Corleone always said)
3]The third point which I don’t understand is why does a huge developing country like India offer dual citizenship.I am pretty sure , its offered to serve some purpose.I am hoping it was introduced not only serve the interests of the minority who migrate to other countries but also the interests of majority who are in India.I personally think it would be help the country more if the citizenship of the people, who apply for one in other countries, is revoked. That would ensure that people who pursue higher education in developed countries don’t end up getting settled there but instead come back and work for developing India.
If I am looking at the whole thing in the correct perspective then I think its about time something needs to be done but if it is ignorance that is the cause for my opinions even then I see the need for something to be done because I personally know a lot of young people who share a similar opinion on these issues and that’s not good.
